A car tracker does not automatically reduce your insurance excess. Some insurers may offer different terms for a particular security system; others require a tracker as a condition of theft cover without giving a discount. Your policy and the insurer's written response determine the outcome.
Excess, premium and cover requirements are different
- Premium: the price you pay for the insurance policy.
- Excess: the contribution you must pay towards a claim under the policy terms.
- Security condition: a requirement to have a named device or category installed and, where specified, actively monitored.
A change to one does not necessarily change the others. A tracker might be required to obtain cover while leaving both the premium and theft excess unchanged.

Ask your insurer before buying
Give the insurer your vehicle details and the exact tracker model you are considering. Ask these questions before assuming there will be a financial saving:
- Do you require a tracker, and which category or named model?
- Will this device change my theft excess, premium, both or neither?
- What fitting, certificate and monitoring conditions apply?
- When must it be fitted, and what cover applies beforehand?
- Can you confirm the agreed terms in writing?
Keep the response with your policy documents. A general percentage quoted online is not an offer from your insurer.
Choose the protection your policy actually specifies
S7 provides tracking without S5 driver recognition. S5 adds driver recognition, while our S5 Plus adds tag-based start protection. Choosing a more expensive package does not itself guarantee better insurance terms.
Thatcham certification tests product security performance. Thatcham Research explicitly distinguishes certification from insurer recognition, so check acceptance for your own policy.

Budget for the service as well as the hardware
Our standard S7 is £169 fitted, S5 is £349 fitted and S5 Plus is £449 fitted. Monitoring is £10.99/month separately. At current rates, twelve months of monitoring cost £131.88. Compare that cost with any actual saving your insurer offers, as well as the protection you want.
Prices checked on 18 September 2026. Figures exclude optional extras and assume monitoring remains at £10.99/month. Check the product page for current pricing.
What if you already have a tracker?
Check the model, monitoring status and registered vehicle details before renewal. Tell your insurer about changes to the vehicle or system and ask whether updated evidence is needed. If monitoring stops or the device develops a fault, contact the provider and insurer promptly rather than assuming cover is unaffected.
