Choosing your protection

Understand the differences before choosing your system.

8 answers

What is the difference between S7, S5, S5 Plus and Casper?

S7 focuses on tracking and recovery support. S5 adds Automatic Driver Recognition. Our S5 Plus packages add immobilisation to S5 tracking. Casper is an immobiliser designed to prevent unauthorised starting; a standalone Casper does not replace a tracking system.

Which system does my insurer need?

Check the security clause in your insurance schedule for the category, any named device and fitting or monitoring conditions. If it specifies S5, an S7 tracker is not a substitute. Send us the wording and we can help you choose; your insurer confirms acceptance.

Does Thatcham certification mean every insurer will accept it?

No. Certification assesses the security product, while acceptance depends on your insurer and policy. Check the exact device and installation requirements before buying. You can also check the Thatcham Research certification directory.

Is S5 Plus a separate Thatcham category?

S5 Plus is the name of our enhanced S5 package with added immobilisation. The tracking certification is Category S5. If your insurer asks for “S5 Plus”, check the specific immobilisation features or product they require.

Will a tracker reduce my insurance premium?

Some insurers may offer a discount, while others require a tracker as a condition of cover. A lower premium is not guaranteed. Ask your insurer what difference the exact system will make before ordering.

Can I have a tracker and an immobiliser together?

Yes, subject to vehicle compatibility. They do different jobs: an immobiliser helps prevent unauthorised starting, while a monitored tracker supports locating and recovering the vehicle. Our S5 Plus packages combine these layers.

Can any security device guarantee my vehicle will not be stolen?

No system can guarantee that. Tracking, immobilisation, sensible key security and other physical precautions work together to reduce risk. A vehicle may still be moved without being driven, which is one reason tracking and immobilisation complement each other.

Do you help me choose without knowing all the technical terms?

Absolutely. Tell us your vehicle make, model, year and any insurance requirement. We can explain suitable options in plain English. Speak to our team or use our tracker buying guide.

Thatcham S7

Straightforward tracking, monitoring and recovery support.

8 answers

What does a Thatcham S7 tracker do?

Our S7 systems provide vehicle location tracking with 24/7 control-room monitoring on an active subscription. They are designed to help identify a possible theft and support recovery. Choose the wired or battery model according to your vehicle and insurance requirements.

Does S7 use a driver tag or stop the vehicle starting?

S7 does not provide the S5 driver-recognition feature, and our standalone S7 trackers do not add “No Tag, No Start” immobilisation. Consider S5 for driver recognition or S5 Plus for tracking with added immobilisation.

Can I buy S7 if my insurance schedule says S5?

Choose S5 when your policy specifies S5, unless your insurer has agreed an alternative. S7 is a different category and does not include S5 Automatic Driver Recognition. We can help you check the wording before you order.

What is included with the professionally fitted S7?

Our wired Thatcham S7 includes the tracker and nationwide professional installation. It provides real-time 4G GPS tracking, theft alerts and an online dashboard. Monitoring is a separate £10.99 per month subscription.

How is the self-fit S7 battery tracker different?

The S7 Battery Tracker works independently of the vehicle’s wiring and sends four routine location updates per day. It is different from our wired real-time tracking option. Check that your insurer accepts this specific self-fit model.

How long does the S7 battery tracker last?

The stated battery life is up to five years at four routine location updates per day. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed lifespan; usage and operating conditions affect battery life. Contact us for advice about monitoring the battery and arranging replacement.

How do I get a certificate for a self-fit S7?

Follow the supplied fitting instructions and take a short drive. Our team checks the positioning and reporting data remotely before making the certificate available in the app. Simply placing an order does not complete this verification.

Can I upgrade from S7 to S5 later?

Speak to us first so we can check your existing hardware and the vehicle. Moving to S5 requires a suitable S5 system and driver recognition; it is not simply a change of subscription name. We will explain any replacement, fitting and certificate requirements.

Thatcham S5

Tracking with Automatic Driver Recognition.

8 answers

What does S5 add compared with S7?

Our S5 adds Automatic Driver Recognition using security tags. The system detects movement without an authorised tag and raises an alert, alongside real-time 4G GPS tracking and 24/7 monitoring on an active subscription.

What is Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR)?

ADR helps the tracking system recognise an authorised driver by detecting their paired security tag. If the vehicle moves without a recognised tag, the system can flag potentially unauthorised use to the monitoring service.

Does the standard S5 stop someone starting my vehicle?

Our standard S5 provides tracking and driver recognition, rather than the added start prevention supplied with S5 Plus. If you want “No Tag, No Start” protection as well, compare our S5 Plus package.

What is included with your S5 tracker?

Our S5 package includes the tracker, driver-recognition tags and nationwide professional installation. The separate monitoring subscription is £10.99 per month. We help you get started after fitting and activation.

Where should I keep my driver tag?

Carry it with you when driving and keep it separate from your vehicle keys where practical. Avoid leaving it in the vehicle: someone taking the car could then have the tag as well. Follow the guidance supplied at installation.

What if I forget or lose my S5 tag?

Contact the monitoring or support team using the details provided at handover. They can explain how to manage alerts and arrange replacement or removal of a lost tag from the system. Do not ignore a monitoring call or assume the tracker is faulty.

Can more than one person drive the vehicle?

Yes, but each driver needs to follow the system’s authorisation process. Tell us how many regular drivers you have so we can confirm the supplied tags and any additional tag costs before installation.

Does the driver tag need a battery?

Follow the care and battery instructions for the tag supplied with your system. If it becomes unreliable or reports a low battery, arrange attention promptly. Contact us if you are unsure which replacement or procedure applies to your tag.

04

Thatcham S5 Plus

S5 tracking with an extra layer of start protection.

9 answers

What does your S5 Plus package include?

Our standard S5 Plus combines S5 tracking, driver-recognition tags and “No Tag, No Start” immobilisation. Nationwide professional installation is included. Monitoring is charged separately at £10.99 per month.

How does “No Tag, No Start” work?

On the standard S5 Plus package, an authorised tag must be present for starting to be permitted. This adds protection even if someone has the vehicle key. Your installer explains the authorisation process for your particular vehicle.

Is S5 Plus suitable for every vehicle?

Compatibility needs to be checked for the exact make, model, year and powertrain. Tell us those details before ordering if you are unsure. We also offer a dedicated package for compatible electric and hybrid vehicles.

How is the EV and Hybrid S5 Plus package authorised?

Our EV and Hybrid package uses a personal PIN entered with the vehicle’s existing buttons to authorise starting. Its Casper CAN immobilisation is PIN-operated, rather than the standard S5 Plus package’s tag-operated start protection.

What is the S5 Plus Sleeper Edition?

The Sleeper Edition adds a concealed secondary battery and a covert installation to our S5 Plus system. It includes driver recognition, “No Tag, No Start” protection and backup power to keep the tracker reporting if its main supply is disconnected.

How long does the Sleeper Edition backup battery last?

Backup time depends on the battery, reporting activity and conditions. It is not an unlimited power source. Ask us about the configuration for your vehicle rather than relying on a fixed duration that may not apply.

Can I stop a moving vehicle from my phone?

Do not treat immobilisation as a way to stop a moving vehicle. Our “No Tag, No Start” and PIN descriptions refer to start authorisation. For a suspected theft, follow the monitoring team’s instructions and let the police handle recovery.

What if I lose a tag or forget my PIN?

Use the support and recovery process provided at installation. Contact the team so ownership can be verified and the correct assistance arranged. Keep any recovery information securely away from the vehicle and do not share your PIN publicly.

Can I choose S5 Plus when my insurer only asks for S5?

It may be suitable if you want additional immobilisation, but confirm that the exact S5-certified system meets the policy wording and your vehicle is compatible. The additional feature does not remove any installation, activation or monitoring requirements.

Casper CAN immobilisers

PIN-operated protection, plus the differences from Casper Pro.

12 answers

What is a Casper CAN immobiliser?

The PIN-operated Casper immobiliser connects to a compatible vehicle’s CAN network and requires a personal button sequence before starting is authorised. It adds an extra check beyond possession of the vehicle key.

What does CAN mean?

CAN stands for Controller Area Network: the communication network used by electronic systems within a vehicle. A compatible CAN immobiliser uses this network as part of its start-authorisation process.

How do I enter the Casper PIN?

You use a personal sequence on supported existing vehicle buttons, such as steering-wheel controls. There is no separate keypad to enter the PIN on. The available buttons and exact procedure depend on the vehicle and are demonstrated at handover.

What is the difference between Casper and Casper Pro?

The PIN-operated Casper uses a button sequence. Casper Pro is the tag-operated “No Tag, No Start” option. Choose according to vehicle compatibility and whether you prefer entering a sequence or carrying a tag.

Is Casper also a GPS tracker?

A standalone Casper immobiliser does not provide the GPS location and monitored recovery service of a tracker. If you want both, ask about a compatible tracking package, including our S5 Plus EV and Hybrid package where appropriate.

Does Casper replace an insurer-required S5 or S7 tracker?

No. An immobiliser and a tracking system perform different functions. If your policy requires an S5 or S7 tracker, check the exact tracking requirement even if you also have Casper fitted.

Is Casper the same product as an Autowatch Ghost?

No. Casper is the product we supply under the Casper name. “Ghost-like” describes its discreet style of protection; it does not mean the product is an Autowatch Ghost. Check the exact brand and model if your insurer names a specific device.

Can Casper help if someone has a stolen or cloned key?

The PIN-operated system adds a separate authorisation step, so the vehicle key alone is not intended to be enough to authorise starting. It does not prevent every form of theft, and tracking can add recovery support if a vehicle is moved another way.

Will Casper fit my BMW, Audi or Mercedes?

We list Casper options for BMW, Audi and Mercedes, but compatibility should be checked for the exact model, year and specification. The badge alone is not enough to confirm suitability. Send us the vehicle details and we will help.

Can Casper be fitted to an electric or hybrid vehicle?

It can be an option for compatible models. Ask us to confirm your exact vehicle before ordering. Our dedicated EV and Hybrid S5 Plus package combines S5 tracking with Casper’s vehicle-button PIN protection.

Can I change my PIN or let a garage work on the vehicle?

Your installer will explain the supported PIN-change and servicing procedures for your fitted system. Before a service, MOT or valet visit, ask how to authorise access appropriately. Avoid sharing your everyday PIN unnecessarily.

Does Casper have a monthly monitoring charge?

Our standalone Casper listings are immobiliser packages rather than monitored tracking subscriptions. The £10.99 monthly charge applies to the separate Thatcham tracking service. If you combine products, check the tracking subscription shown with that package.

06

Ordering & installation

From choosing your vehicle details to getting your certificate.

10 answers

Is professional installation included?

Nationwide professional installation is included with our wired S7, S5 and S5 Plus packages, and professional fitting is included with our Casper packages. The S7 Battery Tracker is the self-fit exception. Check your selected product and confirm arrangements for your location.

Can fitting take place at my home or work?

We arrange mobile fitting at a suitable location where available. Provide your postcode, vehicle details and preferred dates so the team can confirm the appointment and any access requirements. A requested date is not a confirmed booking until agreed.

What happens after checkout?

Keep your order confirmation handy. For professionally fitted systems, the team will help arrange installation and activation; follow any delivery and booking instructions in your confirmation. For the battery S7, follow the self-fit instructions and arrange the remote checks.

What information do you need for fitting?

We will need the vehicle details and fitting location, plus suitable contact and appointment information. Use the fields on the product page and provide accurate details for the vehicle being protected. Tell us about any existing aftermarket security equipment.

How long does installation take?

The time varies by vehicle and the package being fitted. Your booking team or installer can give you an estimate. Allow time for installation, testing, activation and a demonstration, rather than planning around a guaranteed one-hour appointment.

Can I order systems for several vehicles?

Yes. Configure each vehicle separately so its registration, system choice and installation details are recorded correctly. For a larger order or a fleet, contact us and we can help coordinate the requirements.

When will I receive my insurance certificate?

The system needs to be installed, activated and checked before certification is completed. For the self-fit battery S7, this includes remote verification. Check the vehicle details on your certificate and send it to your insurer if requested.

Will installation affect my vehicle warranty or lease?

Tell us if the vehicle is leased, financed or under warranty, and check any approval requirements with the relevant provider before fitting. We can explain the proposed installation, but cannot promise how every manufacturer or lease provider will treat a modification.

Can the system be moved to my next vehicle?

It may be possible, depending on the hardware, new vehicle compatibility and installation requirements. Ask us before removal or transfer. Professional work, reactivation and updated certification may be needed, and charges can apply.

What if I need to change my order or fitting date?

Contact us promptly with your order details so we can check what is possible. Cancellation, return and rescheduling conditions depend on the order and work already arranged. See our refund policy and contact the team for your specific booking.

07

Monitoring & everyday use

Subscriptions, alerts, travel and help when you need it.

12 answers

How much is monitoring?

Monitoring for our Thatcham tracking packages is £10.99 per month, separate from the tracker purchase price. Check your selected package and checkout for the subscription details. Standalone Casper immobilisation is different from monitored GPS tracking.

What does the monitoring subscription provide?

It connects your Thatcham tracking system to a 24/7 control room for monitoring alerts and supporting stolen-vehicle recovery. It provides a response service beyond simply viewing a location yourself. The features and reporting frequency depend on the tracker you choose.

When does protection start?

Ordering alone does not activate the system. Complete the required fitting or self-fit verification, activation and subscription setup, then follow the confirmation supplied by the team. Make sure this timing meets any deadline set by your insurer.

What happens if my monitoring subscription stops?

Do not assume monitored recovery support continues if a subscription expires or a payment fails. Contact us to resolve the issue and check the status of your service. An inactive subscription may also affect compliance with your insurance conditions.

Can I cancel, pay annually or transfer a subscription?

Contact us to confirm the options and terms for your account before making a change. We do not assume a particular minimum term, annual price or transfer entitlement applies to every package. Check any insurance implications before ending monitoring.

Can I view the vehicle location on my phone?

Our tracking packages provide app or dashboard access after setup. The wired systems offer real-time tracking; the self-fit battery S7 sends four routine updates per day. Your handover explains access and the features available with your system.

Will tracking work underground or without a mobile signal?

GPS reception and mobile coverage affect location updates and communication. Underground parking and other obstructions can limit these. A displayed position may be the most recently reported location, so check its timestamp and contact support if updates remain unavailable.

Can I take the vehicle abroad?

Check coverage for your destination and any monitoring or insurance conditions before travelling. Tell the team about ferry transport or other planned movements that could trigger alerts. Do not assume every country or network is included.

What if my vehicle is being serviced, transported or towed?

Follow the monitoring provider’s guidance for planned movement or maintenance so alerts can be managed correctly. Your immobiliser may also have a specific servicing procedure. Ask for instructions for your fitted system before handing the vehicle over.

What should I do if I think the vehicle has been stolen?

Contact the police and your monitoring provider promptly using the emergency details supplied with the system. Follow their instructions and provide any requested incident reference. Do not confront anyone or attempt to recover the vehicle yourself.

What if the tracking app is not updating or I get an unexpected alert?

Check the timestamp and follow the support guidance supplied with your system. Respond to legitimate monitoring calls and keep your contact details up to date. If you suspect a theft, contact the monitoring provider promptly rather than waiting for an app issue to resolve.

Who can help with a question not covered here?

Contact Thatcham Trackers on 01924 976922 or use our Contact page for product, fitting and account questions. For a suspected theft, use the monitoring provider’s dedicated contact details from your handover.
