Can a car tracker reduce your insurance premium?

Technician installing car tracker device

A car tracker may help you obtain cover or meet a security condition, but it does not automatically reduce your insurance premium. Any saving depends on the insurer, vehicle, driver and policy. Avoid buying on the assumption that a particular percentage discount will apply.

A cover requirement is different from a discount

Your insurer may require a specified tracker before theft cover begins or by a stated deadline. Meeting that condition is important even when the premium stays the same. A tracker requirement does not mean the insurer will also reduce your excess or settle a claim faster.

Ask for a like-for-like quote

  • Does this policy require a tracker, and which category or named device is accepted?
  • Would fitting the proposed device change the premium or theft excess?
  • What evidence is required after installation?
  • When must installation and monitoring be active?
  • What should you do if the device develops a fault or monitoring is interrupted?

Ask the insurer to confirm the answers in writing. Compare quotes with the same cover, excess and payment terms so a supposed tracker saving is not confused with a change elsewhere in the policy.

S5 is not the same as S7

Our S7 package provides monitored tracking. S5 adds Automatic Driver Recognition using a tag, and our S5 Plus packages add start protection. S7 is not a higher category than S5 and is not a substitute where the policy requires S5. The correct choice is the device and specification your insurer accepts.

Include the monitoring cost

Our package Fitted price With 12 months of monitoring
Thatcham S7 £169 £300.88
Thatcham S5 £349 £480.88
Thatcham S5 Plus £449 £580.88

These totals use £10.99/month monitoring and exclude optional extras. The first month is paid at checkout, with subsequent monthly payments arranged separately. Prepaid options are available. Compare the full cost with any saving your insurer actually quotes.

Keep the insurer informed

Supply the installation certificate when requested and check that the insurer has recorded the correct device. Keep monitoring active and notify the insurer if circumstances change. The effect of a fault, missed payment or unfulfilled condition depends on the policy and circumstances; ask for advice rather than assuming cover is either unaffected or automatically void.

What about the excess?

The excess is the amount you contribute to a claim; the premium is the price of insurance. They can change independently. Read our guide to trackers and insurance excess for the questions to ask.

A tracker’s purpose is to support vehicle security and recovery. Treat any confirmed insurance saving as a separate benefit, not a guaranteed return on the purchase.
