The Thatcham S7 is a monitored stolen vehicle tracker. The Thatcham S5 is an S7 with driver recognition added. TL;DR

  • S7: GPS tracking with a monitoring centre for stolen vehicle recovery. It is the lower-cost category.
  • S5: everything in the S7, plus driver recognition. The tracker can tell when an unauthorised person is driving.
  • Insurers set the category. Fitting an S7 where the policy asks for an S5 can leave the requirement unmet.
  • Thatcham Trackers prices: S7 £169, S5 £349, S5 Plus £449, each with a digital certificate.
  • Motorhome policies often tie the category to vehicle value. Check the insurer’s wording first.

What the S7 and S5 categories are

Thatcham Research is the UK body that tests and certifies vehicle security products for the insurance industry. Its security certification has been an industry benchmark since the 1990s. Insurers use the listings to decide which devices count towards a policy condition or a discount.

The current names are S5 and S7. According to Thatcham Research’s security Q&A, categories 5, 6 and 7 were replaced by S5 and S7 on 1 January 2019. S7 took over from the older Category 6 and 7 labels. S5 replaced Category 5. Older policy documents may still use the legacy numbers. New installations must meet the S-category standards.

A background explainer is also available in the guide What Is a Thatcham Certified Tracker? S7, S5 and S5 Plus Explained.

The core difference: what each tracker does

Both categories are professionally monitored tracking systems. Both are designed to help locate a vehicle after theft. The gap is in what happens before a theft is reported.

Thatcham S7: tracking and recovery

An S7 follows the vehicle by GPS. A monitoring centre works with the police after the owner reports a theft. The device acts after the event. It does not judge who is driving.

The S7 is the most widely requested category. Insurers commonly ask for it on higher-risk cars, vans and some motorhomes. It suits owners whose policy specifies S7 or a Category 6 or 7 equivalent.

Thatcham S5: tracking plus driver recognition

An S5 does everything an S7 does. It adds driver detection. The system checks whether an authorised driver is present, usually through a tag or card, or through a phone-based method on some products. A journey without the authorised driver can raise an alert earlier in the theft.

That earlier warning is why insurers ask for S5 on the vehicles most targeted by organised theft. Global Telemetrics describes the same split: both categories give monitored tracking, and S5 adds driver detection.

S5 Plus

S5 Plus sits above S5. Thatcham Trackers lists it at £449. It is the option when an insurer names S5+ or when extra functions are wanted on top of S5. The S5 Plus range is on the S5 Plus collection page.

What the market charges

Prices vary between suppliers and between fitted and unfitted products. One 2026 cost guide from Car Insurance Expert puts a fitted S7 at £169 to £400 and a fitted S5 at £300 to £700 or more. The same guide says monitoring usually adds £100 to £150 a year, or from £7.99 a month.

Fitted S7 and S5 prices with monitoring costs

The figures show a pattern. The S5 costs more than the S7, and the monitoring subscription is a running cost for both. A comparison between suppliers needs the same basis: hardware, fitting, certificate and subscription. A low headline price can leave out one of these.

Further breakdown is in the guide Thatcham tracker cost: what UK owners should budget.

Which one to buy

The choice follows four checks.

  1. The insurer’s wording. The policy schedule, renewal letter or quote names the category. This outranks every other factor.
  2. The vehicle. High-value and frequently stolen models more often trigger an S5 condition.
  3. The discount. Some insurers reward an approved tracker with a lower premium. Ask the insurer to confirm what a specific category earns.
  4. The budget. The gap between S7 and S5 at Thatcham Trackers is £180 on hardware. Compare this with the premium difference quoted by the insurer.

If the insurer says S7 or higher, an S5 satisfies the wording. If the insurer says S5, an S7 does not. If the insurer has not named a category, ask the question before buying. A tracker that does not meet the condition can put the cover at risk.

The Choose the Right Thatcham Tracker page walks through the same decision.

A worked example

A driver renews a policy on a high-value SUV. The insurer’s renewal letter says an S5 is required within 30 days. Fitting an S7 at £169 would cost less. It would not meet the letter. The S5 at £349 meets it. The £180 difference is the price of meeting the condition.

A second driver has an older van with a letter asking for S7. An S7 at £169 meets it. Paying £349 for an S5 gives no extra compliance.

Motorhomes: S7 or S5

Motorhome insurers often link the security requirement to value. The Caravan Guard motorhome security document shows how one insurer sets its security discounts and requirements. Its January 2026 document lists up to 25% in security system discounts for approved alarms and trackers. In practice, policies often ask for at least an S7 on motorhomes valued from £75,000 to £100,000. Above £100,000, either S5 or S7 may be asked for, depending on the insurer’s assessment.

These thresholds belong to one insurer’s rules. Another insurer may set different values. Confirm the requirement in writing before ordering.

A motorhome that is stored for long periods may also need a battery-powered option. Thatcham Trackers lists an S7 battery tracker. Storage guidance is in Get Insurer Approved S5, S5+ or S7 for Motorhome Storage Security. A comparison of device types is in Types of motorhome trackers.

A tracker is one layer. Locks and keys are another. Owners who have lost keys or suspect a copied key can look at mobile rekeying for car locks, which explains how a mobile locksmith deletes and reprogrammes stolen keys.

Perspective: why category matters more than price

We see the same problem often. An owner buys the cheapest tracker found online, then the insurer rejects it. The device was real. The category or the certificate was wrong for the policy.

For that reason, every tracker and immobiliser we sell is Thatcham certified and comes with a digital certificate. We state that insurers accept our products, and that fitting is available nationwide by accredited engineers. The S7 is the right answer when the insurer asks for S7. The S5 is the right answer when the insurer asks for S5, or when the owner wants driver recognition on a vehicle at high risk.

Where theft risk is high, we also point owners to an immobiliser alongside the tracker. A tracker helps recovery. An immobiliser helps stop the vehicle from being driven away. The two together are covered on the tracker and immobiliser page.

Common mistakes

  • Buying before asking the insurer. The category on the policy decides the purchase.
  • Treating S7 as a lesser product. S7 is a full Thatcham-certified monitored tracker. It is correct where S7 is asked for.
  • Ignoring monitoring costs. Both categories need an active subscription for the cover to stand.
  • Using an uncertified device. Only devices on Thatcham’s listings count. The national vehicle security listing shows products evaluated by Thatcham Research.
  • Missing the legacy names. An older policy may ask for Category 6 or 7. These map to S7 today.

FAQ

Which is best, Thatcham S5 or S7?

Neither is best in general. The best one is the category the insurer names. S5 gives more protection through driver recognition, and S7 costs less. An S5 meets an S7 requirement, but an S7 does not meet an S5 requirement.

How much is a Thatcham S5 tracker?

Thatcham Trackers lists the S5 at £349 as a one-off price. The S5 Plus is £449. Other suppliers charge differently, and one 2026 guide gives a fitted range of £300 to £700 or more.

How much is an S7 tracker?

The S7 at Thatcham Trackers is £169 as a one-off price. A monitoring subscription is a separate running cost with most suppliers. Terms are confirmed at order.

Can an S7 replace an S5 for insurance?

Only if the insurer accepts it in writing. An S5 requirement means driver recognition is needed, and an S7 does not provide it. Contact the insurer before ordering.
